LIVEI-5 is open over Siskiyou Summit in both directions, bare pavement, with carry chains or traction tires in effect.
Carry Chains or Traction Tires. Road surface: bare pavement. Temperature at the summit is 41°F.
Carry Chains or Traction Tires. Road surface: bare pavement. Conditions at the summit can be very different from conditions in Ashland or Medford, so check the cameras before you leave.
When storms outrun the regular chain postings, ODOT sets a conditional closure on the summit and checks vehicles at the control point. Holds can run from under an hour to most of a day. Check this page before you leave during any storm cycle.
Interstate 5 is the west coast's main north south artery, and its highest point anywhere is here: Siskiyou Summit at 4,310 feet, on the climb south of Ashland between the Rogue Valley and the California line. It is the one place on the whole interstate where winter routinely stops traffic.
That is why this page pairs live conditions with a guide, and why the site also tracks the three Cascade passes that feed Bend: Santiam, Willamette, and Government Camp. The cameras and status above tell you what is happening now, and the guide below helps you plan the drive.
Oregon's chain law applies to every highway in the state. In a snow zone, posted signs set the requirement, and the posting in effect at Siskiyou Summit right now is the one at the top of this page.
Carry chains or traction tires: The equipment must be in or on your vehicle, the right size, and enough of it to meet Oregon's minimum chain requirements.
Chains or traction tires required: Vehicles that are towing, and single drive axle vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross weight, must use chains. Lighter vehicles that are not towing may use traction tires instead.
Conditional closure: The strongest posting. Chains are required on some or all vehicles no matter what tires they run, and officers check at the control point. The full ladder is on this site's chains page.
